dBA vs. dBC for Data Center Noise

dBA and dBC are frequency weightings, not competing verdicts. A useful data center sound review connects both the metric and the measurement method to the sound people may experience at homes, schools, and other sensitive locations.

What dBA emphasizes

The A-weighted scale reduces the contribution of lower and very high frequencies to better approximate human hearing at common sound levels. It is widely used in ordinances and environmental reviews, making it useful for comparison and compliance. But a single overall dBA value can conceal a distinct hum, tone, or low-frequency component.

What dBC adds

The C-weighted scale is flatter across a broader frequency range and gives more weight to low-frequency energy than dBA. A notable gap between dBC and dBA can be a prompt for more analysis, but the gap alone does not diagnose a problem. Octave-band or one-third-octave-band data, tonal analysis, duration, and background conditions provide the needed context.

Model the real operating cases

Sound sources can include rooftop mechanical equipment, cooling systems, transformers, substations, air-handling equipment, and emergency-generator tests. Reviews should identify simultaneous worst-case operation, nighttime conditions, seasonal modes, barriers, terrain, reflections, and meteorological assumptions. Manufacturer data should be traceable to the equipment and model inputs.

Verify at community receptors

Define measurement points before approval: property lines, the nearest residence, schools, outdoor-use areas, and any location where terrain or building reflections matter. Specify weather limits, instrument settings, time averaging, background correction, post-construction testing, complaint intake, corrective deadlines, and who pays for independent verification.

Virginia now requires earlier attention

Virginia’s 2026 HB 153 requires covered site assessments to examine the sound profile near residences and schools. Separately, enacted budget language directs statewide data center noise regulations by the end of 2029. Local ordinances and project conditions still need to be checked because the applicable rules can differ by location and date.

Measure the sound people may experience

Use dBA for the established framework, add dBC and frequency analysis when low-frequency or tonal sound is plausible, and tie every commitment to a defined receptor and verification method.
